Language Arts
8th graders are working on elements of fiction in the stories "The Cask of Amontillado" and "The Tell Tale Heart."  All students are currently working on persuasive writing with "Occasion/Position" essays.

Science
Scientific Method and Chemistry have been a perfect blend to start the year. The basics of chemistry (were practiced with the fun app "Nova Periodic Table". Students really enjoyed building virtual models of the different atoms. They also made silly putty using common household ingredients.  Labs should have a hypothesis, so students designed a lab to test whether changing the brand of one of the ingredients would change how high the silly putty would bounce. The answer?  Ask an 8th grader!

Solubility, bonding types, rate of reaction, reaction types, and balancing chemical equations were also covered in the chemistry unit.  Students used electricity to initiate several types of chemical reactions using a solution of NaHCO3.  Even though they expected a chemical reaction, they were surprised to see the complexity of what occurred.  This lab was used to practice the skill of communicating experiment results in a Formal Lab Report.

8th grade students will use their Chemistry Basics throughout the rest of their year.  Next stop: Environmental Science.
