Last year marked the first time we extended the elementary character assemblies into the middle school. The character education program we utilize is T.W.I.X. (Together - We - Intentionally - Excel). This program focuses on five core character traits throughout the school year. These traits are selected from the following: empathy, responsibility, perseverance, integrity, kindness, self-direction, teamwork, respect, and courage.
The program is a collaborative effort between the middle school counselor and the teachers. Every trait is explored through a series of 3–4 interactive and reflective lessons over the course of 1–2 months. Students engage in meaningful discussions within their grade-level cohorts, guided by thoughtful questions related to the trait being taught. Each lesson includes hands-on components that get students moving, speaking, reading, and writing to deepen their understanding and connection to the character focus.
At the end of each unit, the entire middle school gathers for a T.W.I.X. assembly to celebrate students who consistently demonstrated the featured trait. During the assembly, we also introduce the next character trait students will explore. Recognized students receive a T.W.I.X. t-shirt and certificate as part of their acknowledgment.
Our first T.W.I.X. assembly of the year will be held on August 21st. We look forward to beginning the school year by building a strong foundation for developing responsible, ethical, and successful students within the Legacy Academy Middle School.
